hmm. there is file api in core, and filesystem module in development by dopry - http://drupal.org/project/filesyste,. his is intended to go into core during the next release. do we really want to encourage this one as well?
Moshe, a maintainer is needed anyway to create (or manage the contributors to create) a migration path for a new/different module. Gabor
