Thanks for this I have already sorted it. i had access to the database in phpmyadmin so created a user with UID 1 and the same username as before . I have since been able to log in and all my content is intact

The following assumes two things:
- You can create a new account
- You have access to the database for the site
First, create and activate your new account. Specifically, change (or make careful note of your automatically generated) password.
Then, access the users table in the db -- change the UID of your new user to 1.
Log in, and you're good to go.
