Thanks for your help, as I understand it ImageCache is now core in 7, my
question though is how to make the thumbnail field to expose it in the
view?

You'll also need ImageCache to make the thumbnails. In the slideshow
settings in your view you have to enable a pager (unter Widgets) and
choose the views field(s) that should be used as page. So you need a
regular views field that shows the thumbnails (exclude it from display
so it won't show up in the slides content).
