Thanks for that info Joel, there was nothing remarkable on the cck display fields and I did visit /admin/content/node-settings and rebuilt permissions but still no joy. Gotta put this aside for while, I just don't see the sense to what's happening.

What I can't figure is that the identical view and display produces feed results for other content types but not this one. And it produces results for this content type with a page display. So there is something special apparently about both the feed and this content type, at least when used in concert.
