For the dropdowns above the catalog, try http://drupalmodules.com/module/views (exposed filters)

If you look at www.gadgetsguru.com there categories are placed as tabs as well as menu in the left sidebar. Above the categories in the left sidebar there are 3 dropdowns which will help the user choose the brand/price range etc.. to choose from to get a specifif set of products. How could we achieve the similar thing in drupal. Kindly note that the products in both the menus is the same they are just displayed differently which gives a much better user experience.
