My worst nightmare was the steady disintegration of the ui for the omega theme. Something may have gotten corrupted in my MAMP installation, so I'll start from a new MAMP and see if it helps. I'm doing everything on a local server so I don't mess up my live one that I need to have functioning. Another thing that seemed to help was setting the php memory higher.
This has been an incredible time sink, and I'm thinking about whether the upgrade is really worth it.
Thanks for the suggestions, and I know it's hard to help from email. There are so many things that can go wrong.
Regards, Bill

Make sure that every module and every theme is up-to-date with their D6 version before updating. Then update to D7. If a module/theme isn't going to be used in D7 be sure to get rid of it in D6 first.

Folks: I am updating my site to Drupal 7. I am using the Omega theme, with a simple sub theme I developed. I'm stuck because the Zone and Region configuration menus no longer open up to set the configurations of each region. It did work, but after a LOT of struggle trying to get the update.php script to run without errors, the Zone and region configuration settings stopped working. In addition, the Omega them Layout Configuration had a nice selectable menu on the left, and this disappeared and the entire settings list appeared on a single page.
Any advice? I'm coming to the conclusion that I don't need to do the upgrade, but if there is some obvious thing I'm doing wrong, I'll keep trying. I've followed the Omega theme directions by having the required modules available.
