A lot of people download themes and use them in whole or in part. There is
no such thing as a ignorant question, the only path to learning is through
questions. I just wish more people felt like this. Some forums are really
scary.

page.tpl.php is part of a theme. If it is part of a standard theme, when
that theme upgrades, the changes will be lost. If you created a custom
theme or subtheme then you are safe.
