There could be, actually, such a problem, and I think this problem was somehow related to PHP 5.2 If I recall well, the problem continued to a later version of Drupal 5. Check it out and see if it help you: http://drupal.org/node/102114

There is absolutely no reason that Drupal 5 prevents you to log in via IE. I suggest you try emptying the temporary files, caches and cookies in your IE. If you still have an issue then ask for help.
