my question though is how to make the thumbnail field to expose it in the view?
Did you make a field in the view and does the thumbnail show up there? If it works there but doesn't show up as a slideshow pager, you should probably change your issue innthe modules queue to bug report.
If it doesn't work as a views field either: Does the thumbnail generation even work? Do you see the scaled-down preview on the ImageCache preset's page?
