tx for the tip. there doesnt appear to be any "frontpage.module" or anything that looks like it. there is node block and page.module, but assme these are more general components. any other ideas what the frontpage.module might be called/under?

i dont know how to tell the drupal version, but i think it was 4.6 (3-4 months ago, with XML-RPC issues).
Look in the CHANGELOG.txt file in your Drupal installation's root directory. If it has "x.x.x, xxxx-xx-xx" as the version and date, then you have a pre-release version.
also, if i were to modify, what is the "hook" i modify for page display? i dont want any of the rest of drupals page rendering mechanism to output to the screen/buffer...
The Front Page module is what you want. Make sure you get the version that matches the version of Drupal you have installed.
