A fair way to test, but I usually develop with all the caches turned off.
I can often accomplish what I want by theming the fields or the teaser view, so the option is there. I was just wondering if there was a general guide.

usually the decision of choosing node vs fields has more to do with need than speed, IMHO.

On the one hand, there are (likely) more queries for Nodes, but caching should also play a role.
