Tends to make Drupal look wanting for e-commerce use because by default the e-commerce module produces 6 'teaser' pages for my 50 or so products and people don't want to go through that many to find what they want...
Try taxonomy_menu module to create links in a block for your categories. That is the standard way AFAIK.
