Of course I've done exactly what you are doing... but FYI it isn't a best practice to use the PHP Filter; it would be better to create the block via a custom module so that your custom PHP is saved as part of the codebase and not in the database. Another reason is that it is dangerous to give users the power to insert PHP code.
But as a newbie, don't be hard on yourself, but make sure not to allow any other users to use the PHP filter.
And do note that a parse error in the PHP can bring down the whole site. So backup often!
