In some ways I almost feel like I'm learning Drupal all over again... I created a content type that includes a Viewfield. I hijacked the Body field to be a "text before" field and then added a "text after" field as well. When I produce a a taxonomy/term/% page, the node with the Viewfield is empty (as is the "text before"). How can I get the View to display in this teaser form? I think you have to go into the Display Fields and control it there. (Edit/Manage Fields/Display Fields). Hope that helps! The editor buttons are available for comments however. I've added the roles to the filter at admin/settings/filters/x I've added the buttons on the WYSIWYG configuration page at admin/settings/wysiwyg/profile/4/edit for the input filter. And finally, you mentioned maybe creating a new filter. You understand that changing the default filter doesn't change any of the content's filter? You may need to change the input format associated with each piece of content. Make sure to check an verify that the piece of content you're trying to edit has the new input filter you created associated with it.
