I don't see how that would help. Unless CS Theme will have it's own engine-type system and break free of PHPTemplate, which would probably add even more complexity to the code.

This is certainly something that would be beneficial. Usually it is just minor tweaks, but I've not thought of any way to achieve this without abstracting the theme functions slightly.
