Maybe you are confusing two things:
On this page http://example.com/admin/config/system/site-information You can enter a specific node to display as your front page. If you leave this field empty the page will per default show the normal content feeds (Nodes you create and that are posted the front page) In my case, this field is set to node/231 as this is my special front page. (I have clean URL, so no ?q=) But up to now you have only stipulated WHAT will be on the front page.
When you start theming (by making a page--front.tpl.php file) you will decide HOW it (the content) is displayed.
Hope this helps

Thanks Laura, I've made that correction. Still wondering what my Default front page would be. At the moment it states: http://Soligsoft:8082/?q= *empty field* I just don't know what to put there.

In Drupal 7, that would be page--front.tpl.php. (Two hyphens as delimiters.)
For more theming tips for D7, look at http://drupal.org/update/theme/6/7

Vers. 7.0 Theme: Genesis
Hello all,
I've created my page-front.tpl.php page to allow me to style differently from the the site. Unfortunately it is not showing up. I've gone to: Home
Administration > Configuration > System and attempted to use the
Default front page with no success. I'm using a local test platform, so have entered: http://sitename:8082/ but don't know what to add after that.
I've researched it on this site, but seem to only get answers for drupal 5.0...... What am I missing or what have I done wrong.
Any help and/or guidance would be greatly appreciated.
