In general, I agree with you.

In the past, I had a hard time staying up to date with Druapl's forums, and 
basically ignored them.  Then I found a way to setup an RSS feed in Kontact 
(using Akregator) for each of the forums.  It's still not e-mail, but it's 
pretty close, and I've been able to stay relatively up to date on the forum 
postings with it.
