image + img_assist. Works today, does exactly what you describe.

Attaching or otherwise associating images with a post make sense in  
workflows for unsophisticated users (who can't "place" images  
exactly) as well as set layouts (consider articles with a specific  
defined region for images). The other thing is that it is only one  
workflow, whether you are doing images, audio, or videos (or PDFs, or  
Word docs, or or). This works well in a corporate environment.
