My opinion:

Drupal: 
 * anything that comes with metadata is a node.
 * Nodes are NOT equivalent of posts

So yes, I think that having some 'any file is a node too' concept is a very, 
very good idea. 
All we would need then, is some simple node->type = foo to node->type = image 
relation system (do I hear relations?) to add your images to any content.
