Where to find free icons?
I'm working on a bunch of file specific stuff, and I've been trying to do some little things to spruce up the file forms. One thing I've done is add a filetype icon... I borrowed some from PHP File Navigator (http://pfn.sourceforge.net). I'm not sure if their licensing allows me to use them, and I want to avoid any possible license conflicts... Can anyone recommend a place to find freeware icons for filetypes... preferably as images... all I keep finding are .ico's.... .darrel.
Icons... Drupal only allows GPL licenced icons to be in its repository (for private projects, however, you may use what you want). There has been a consensus about using the "Tango project" icons within Drupal ( http://tango.freedesktop.org/Tango_Desktop_Project). But these icons are not available under a GPL licence. There are, however, some Tango icons in our repository, for examle in modules/views. There is definitely a need to rediscuss this issue. If we allow CC licenced icons, we could switch to http://www.famfamfam.com/lab/icons/silk/ as they provide a lot more icons suited for a CMS environment, wheras Tango project is aimed towards a (Linux) Desktop/Window manager. Are these still Tango icons? I had asked Merlin to remove them a while ago.

We are not going to change the licensing policy of the cvs repos, Dries has made that clear in the past. Cheers, Gerhard

I agree with Konstantin - this issue needs to be rediscussed. First of all, I think that there is a serious issue with our current policy: the GPL is only designed to cover software, and it is a "hack" to apply the GPL to anything other than software. Therefore, we really need to update our licencing policy, to indicate that an alternative license is to be used for all non-software material in contrib (i.e. audio, video, images, text documents, etc). The obvious choice for such a license is Creative Commons. Reasons for using CC: - The entire Drupal handbook is already licensed under it - It follows the spirit of the GPL (hey, there is even a "CC-GNU GPL"), and it is generally considered to be the "non-software version" of the GPL Cheers, Jaza.

Please try to see this from my pov as the contrib CVS maintainer: Every other licence we allow will introduce more potential hassle. We already have enough hassles with this as is, we don't need more. There are GPLed icons available, so please use these. If they aren't pretty enough, you are free to tell your users where they can download alternative versions. Actually, third party icons do fall under the "third party" clause which says that third party material shouldn't be hosted in our cvs in the first place. :p Last week we've had the first time that somebody contacted use about a legal issue concerning one of our modules. While the issue was easily resolved, I don't really need more of this if it can be avoided. It is just a waste of time.

I am ok with changing the license for everything in docs/ if that is what you want. The licence for modules, themes, etc will most likely not change. Cheers, Gerhard
Oh, there are still loads of Tango icons in the contrib. Also, there are Google, ICQ, Yahoo, WinRAR, several Mac OS X icons, Foood, AIM, a bunch of Windows file type icons, Flash, MSN, Wikipedia, Skype, sIFR, Technorati... 2006/8/13, Gerhard Killesreiter <gerhard@killesreiter.de>:

Can you make me a list? If possible including the directory where they can be found. Yes, I indend to remove them, in case anybody wonders. Cheers, Gerhard

Surely you're not checking every single submission to be sure that the author has the right to release the submission under the GPL? My expectation is that everyone with checkin privileges has first (electronically) signed a such a statement, so I wouldn't expect the CVS maintainer to be involved unless an explicit complaint is made.

Not every submission, but when I notice strange commits I do.

The problem is that people sometimes do not adhere to our TOS, like for example by uploading non-GPLed icons or other stuff. This sometimes comes to my attention either by my own observation or by pointers from others. Since I am responsible for the CVS stuff I feel I should do something about such violations of our TOS, otherwise they'd become quite pointless. Cheers, Gerhard

http://art.gnome.org/themes/icon/ There are several cool icons there. Some of them are GPL, such as Humility, Yasis and Dropline. Henrique

Separately downloading and installing each icon for each module is prohibitively inefficient. Would we choose non-GPL feed icons for our core distribution and instruct users to download the icons separately? Our handbook instructs module developers to use Tango icons: http://drupal.org/node/35416 noting however that we can't include them in CVS. We should instead choose a GPL icon set and use that as our default. Probably we need to either: a. Choose a non-GPL standard set, e.g., Tango, and implement it through a helper module so that users need to download the full set only once. Contrib modules would do something like theme('iconelement', '[iconname]') to output an icon. b. Choose a GPL icon set (and, possibly do the helper module approach too). c. Put in place a technical solution that combines CVS code with externally sourced files to create a single download, or c. sounds difficult. Personally, I'm for b. Here's another listing that includes several GPL sets, with preview samples: http://www.maxpower.ca/free-icons/2006/03/05/

Separate installation of icons is a bad idea. Installing modules should be easy and not require excessive downloading. Not being able to include copylefted icons meant for open source projects to use is ridiculous. Yes, there are legal issues. From what I can tell, any downloads we provide and websites made with those downloads would be considered "collective works" and require attribution and a link to http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.5/. But I'm not a lawyer. I do know a lawyer at the EFF. I think we should: 1. Make it obvious what legal responsibilities the operators of Drupal.org and individual contributors have over contributions. 2. Figure out common licensing issues so individual contributors don't have to. 3. Continue to enforce GPL-only for code. -- Neil Drumm http://delocalizedham.com/

I sent the following to Jason Schultz (http://www.eff.org/about/staff/#jason_schultz):
Please let me know if you can help us sort this out or know someone who can.
Drupal.org hosts contributed modules and themes with the requirement that "All code must be licensed under GNU/GPL" [1].
We have considered using a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike [2] icon set, Tango [3], but we are too confused about licensing issues to allow it.
We need to figure out any legal issues and make guidelines for contributors. I'm guessing that for the actual download, we need to add a text file next to the icons with attribution and a link to the CC license.
Since Drupal is a tool for building websites, requirements for sites built using Drupal and CC-licensed icons need to be figured out. Ideally, there shouldn't be any additional requirement; we do not require mentioning that a site runs on Drupal.

Nice place to start hunting: http://www.kde-look.org/index.php?xcontentmode=22x27 they have a datafield called "licence".
