Once again, at the risk of repeating myself, the reason HEAD is at issue is that HEAD today is not HEAD in 1 year, and when looking at old documents, something referring to HEAD is referring to what is essentially some unknown codebase. So it's "just fine" if and only if this argument doesn't matter to you.
