how to add blocks to place in regions on my home page

I have a feeling there will be a very simple answer to this question, but I've searched and searched in the documentation and I just can't seem to hit on the right information to guide me. I'm setting up a new site in Drupal (5.2). I managed to get it installed and configured with very little problem, and I've created a new theme and added some content. What I need to do now is set up the home page for the site, which, instead of having one big area for content, will have that area divided into four sections, like this ----------------- | | | | ----------------- | | | | | | | --------- | | | | | | ----------------- each of which needs to be editable by the site owner. I've created regions by defining them in my template.php file, and added the regions to my theme so the are now appearing correctly on the home page. I believe what I need to do next is create some new blocks to place in those regions, and then the site owner can simply edit those blocks as needed. So my questions are: 1) Do I have the right idea with creating regions and placing editable blocks inside those regions? 2) How do I create a new block and ensure that it is editable by the site owner? I've seen mention a few times that I should to to "administer > blocks > add block" but I don't see this option in my site admin; the closest thing to it is "administer > site building > blocks", but this page does not include an "add block" function. I have a feeling that either I'm missing some crucial piece of information, or the documentation I've been reading is not for the version I'm using, or something in my site config is preventing me from seeing all the options/functions I should see in my site admin - or some combination of the above :) Hopefully some kind soul will be able to point me in the right direction! Best practices for mobile sites in Drupal

Hi everyone After a bit of research, I have concluded that there are two main approaches to creating mobile-enabled versions of existing Drupal sites: * Using the mobile theme <http://drupal.org/project/mobile> and setting up some theme switcher / URL alias to redirect requests to 'clean' pages * Using the .mobi loader module <http://drupal.org/project/mobi_loader> + .mobi theme <http://drupal.org/project/mobi> combo, so all requests for the site.mobi domain are intercepted and get the 'clean' theme. However, I have found it quite buggy, so many requests for the mobile site are still getting the default theme, as reported here <http://drupal.org/node/163541> Besides, none of these two themes pass the compatibility tests at http://mtld.mobi How are you managing the mobile versions of your sites? Has anyone combined the above two approaches? two basic questions

hello my first question is about removing a modules : I have to desactivate it in the list's modules, and delete the folder in the modules's archive ? the second : I create 2 views, wonderful in firefox, adding content, refresh, new content, list of content. In Internet Explorer, nothing of nothing, just the title of the view. I try to refresh the cache of IE, nada. page titles for views?

Does anyone know a way to customize the page title (in the title tag) for a view? I asked about this for pages earlier and Bill suggested the page title module which works great - but there are two top level pages that are views that I need to customize the titles for and the page title module doesn't work with views. Since it's only two pages and the title isn't likely to change or at least not often I'm even willing to hard code it into template.php. what i tried so far is to add the following function to _phptemplate_variables: if($vars['node']->nid == '12'){ $vars['head_title'] = "TEST"; } I verified (through print statements) that the statement gets triggered on the proper page and that $vars['head_title'] is printing the current title. Furthermore a similar function is how the page title module does it. Yet when I print out the variable immediately after the function it still stays what it was. Full with print statements and output: print($vars['head_title']); // prints: Photo Gallery | Timberpeg if($vars['node']->nid == '12'){ print(" changing to test "); // prints: changing to test - indicates it gets triggered $vars['head_title'] = "TEST"; } print($vars['head_title']); // prints: Photo Gallery | Timberpeg thanks .sander

Development Best Practices

Hi folks, I'm in the process of developing a new Drupal site that will be fairly active when it gets up and running. As such, I'm wanting to have a development site ("HEAD") and a production site ("RELEASE"), but I'm at a bit of a loss for how to keep the databases in sync, preserving the changes I make on the development side, but not overwriting any of the content that may have been added on the production side. I'm sure others have run into this same problem, and so I'm wondering - are there any "best practices" documents out there to show how others have done it? I'll keep looking, but thought I'd appeal to the collective wisdom in case I miss anything. Cheers, Andrew

Organic groups and roles

Hi, I'm using organic groups for a 5.2 site. I created a new role that has none of the og permissions (create og content, etc.). I have a second role with those permissions added. A user granted with the first role, after he subscribes to the group, he is able to create content (page, story, etc.) inside the group, even though he does not have the required permissions. How can I restrict this user not to create content under this group? I want only users granted with the second role (group editors) to create/edit/delete content inside the group. Simplenews question

Hi As far as I know, Simplenews is the only available module for managing newsletters. However, I find it way too... well, simple (!) when compared to the newsletter modules for other platforms, lacking such basic features as generating the newsletter content automatically, based, for instance, on the 10 most recent nodes, or the last post from some category, or the latest registered users, and so on. Are there any plugins for Simplenews that help creating the newsletter content? Or have I missed some, more advanced, alternative newsletter modules for Drupal? FORUM permission and moderation granularity

Hi all, in the site I am building there are different sections each accessible to a different groups of users identified by different roles; users can have more than one role. I am using Taxonomy Access Control but I do not manage to restrict access to Forums. What I would like is: user with role X can read/write on Forum X user with role X, Y can read/write on Forum X and Y and so on ... I defined Taxonomy Access Permission using the term that is created automatically when you create a Forum but it doesn't seem to work... If the Forum and the Term of the Forum Vocabulary are named "X" I have set Taxonomy access permissions for Anonymous and Authenticated roles as follows: Show-Deny Update-Deny Delete-Deny And for the role "X": Show-Allow Update-Allow Delete-Deny List When log in as a user with role "X" and I try to add a new Forum Topic the drop-down list of Forums is empty! I manage to reply to a Topic added by the admin. Any hints? Second issue: is it possible to have one Forum moderated and another one not moderated on different sections? TIA for your help, Davide

Search and GET or getting GET param and param through URL

Where is the FM to learn how to deal with GET parameters and parameters to hooks? I'd like to have a search form whose results are bookmarkable. So <form action="/d1/search/items" method="get" > <input type="text" name="code" /> <input type="text" name="name" /> </form> etc... so that the resulting url would be /d1/search/items?code=111&name=222 or (?) /d1/search/items/?code=111&name=222 Once I've a search/items hook how can I read extra parameters in the drupalish way? What if I want to pass parameters to a hook through a url? eg.
