Depends on you're level of drupal expertise, and what the gallery module you're going to use.
The options are basically CCK and Image Field Image Cache with views, or the Image module as the core. Both will do the images.
You will have more control over how and where the files get created on the server with Image Cache and Image field, but it's a lot more to set up.
Image module is a good way to get started, and will configure the thumbnail images, etc.

I see here http://drupal.org/node/144725 a method of making an image gallery using CCK and Views.
What I want is an image gallery which:
1. Is easy to use for the layman staff members to add folders/images 2. Automatically creates thumbnails 3. Uses thickbox or lightbox to show full size images
I have never used the Image module so I am open to trying either that or
the CCK/Views method. I have used CCK and Views. :)
Any suggestions?
Thanks, Fred
