I'm using the Glossary module for something similar, although it's not really intended for that.

CCK to the rescue! Create a field for each type of reference you need for the content type you are using.
Using contemplate http://drupal.org/project/contemplate or by customizing http://jodyhamilton.net/node-theming-field-deconstructing-node-content-drup al-5 the relevant .tpl file in your theme, you can make those fields present on your node exactly how you want them.
