Content Access is the most common module (which can use ACL optionally for user based access). It's hard to keep track of them all. There's a ton of different solutions:

Sorry if I'm mistaken, but I thought - some years after my last foray into this particular issue - that it was built in.
Perhaps it's the ACL module which is providing that functionality on my site/s? I honestly can't remember what I did, but it was dead simple at the time.

(I think this is the simplest and most elegant solution because users without access to particular content can't even see menu items created for those Content-types.)
