Thank you to all who replied. The problem was a missing address in the Ubuntu /etc/apt/sources.list in the security section. I added the missing line then apt-get / synaptic had no problems. It found and installed php-mysql and drupal now works well and the update manager now finds it so no need for command line. Now to get a battery for the old laptop and I'm away. Thanks again Roger
