I need to create a block that shows all the recently added content; this is not a problem. What they want, however, is to show the first 5 entries with a "more" link that shows the whole list. I assume some kind of javascript is doing this. Does anyone know of a way to accomplish this? Is there maybe something in jQuery that does it?

I don't know if I've missed the point, but could you put your "more" data (if you're populating the data yourself) into a fieldset and set '#collapsible' and '#collapsed' to true to get a similar result?
