I have a few Drupal sites on a shared hosting account. They are all using 6.10. Each is in its own directory under public_html, with its own installation (i.e. not multi-site). One of the sites, at www.settlercountry.org http://www.settlercountry.org, which has been working fine for a few months, and another site under construction, have the same problem:
This is that the site works fine for a viewer, except that the search function is not working. But when I login as admin, the site "freezes" - i.e. the links do not function and I am unable to navigate to any part of the site, admin or frontend. I cannot logout unless I clear cookies on my local machine.
The error log in the Cpanel of my account gives "File does not exist" messages, but the path is what you would expect it to be.
The other sites under construction on the same server and hosting account (but not yet active with content), are working fine; one of these is very much more complex and uses dozens of modules not used by the "problem" site which is pretty basic, as you can see if you go to it.
I have not touched the databases.
I would be very grateful for any advice! Please make it simple to understand, as I as far from expert as it is possible to be, and am fairly new to this outstanding system! Thanks very much in advance.
Hi Peter,
I would have a look at the Clean URLs and make sure everything is working properly. While it seems like you have them enabled for the site since you have urls of the type "http://www.settlercountry.org/node/3", if I type http://www.settlercountry.org/user, nothing happens, I need to enter http://www.settlercountry.org/?q=user.
With search : http://www.settlercountry.org/?q=search/node/land - will work.
The file not found error would point in the direction of URL re-writing as well.
Try disabling the clean URLs function, see if the website works properly, check .htaccess is all ok, etc and then try to enable them again.
Hope this helps,
Ronald

Dear Ronald,
Thanks very much for this - that was one of the things I thought of, but I didn't think to manually bypass the clean url by typing into the adress bar! I've now got into the admin backpages and disabled clean urls, so can navigate around. I will try to address the further issues.
Thanks again - very much appreciated!
Peter

You might want to research the issue queues. There are reported incidents of infinite loops causing some of the same result you describe here.

Dear Earnie,
Thanks very much - I greatly appreciate your help. In fact it was a mysterious .htaccess problem, which I circumvented by going in to the admin section manually via the address bar, as though clean urls weren't specified. I am currently doing a much needed update to newer versions of core and modules.
Thanks again, and all the best,
Peter

Dear Earnie,
Thanks very much. I've done the update - all working except some annoying issues with nested menus that I have to puzzle out.
All the best,
Peter
