Hi all I have a hd with ubuntu 11.04 server installed. I followed the instructions to install Aegir on the server but it gives errors at the end of the install. Google tells of others experiencing the same errors but gives no resolution.
I installed firefox on the server but think it won't work unless there is a windows manager of some sort. What is the smallest windows manager required to run firefox on a server and what else should be installed.
Can someone please point me to an Aegir tutorial or script that actually does install properly
I would like to be able to access the ubuntu server hard drive from my ubuntu 11 desktop hard drive but have no idea how to do so. How can I work on the server hard drive from my desktop without having to boot into the server hd
Help would be much appreciated, thank you Roger
You'd need to put the Ubuntu system on the network, unless you're saying their in the same system. If their on the same system, then you'll need virtualbox, VMWare, KVM, or some such virtualization setup in order to run both OSes.
As to the problem: what are the errors you're getting, or where on the web can their description be found? Maybe someone can help with that aspect.

What errors?

I haven't tried it on Ubuntu, but Xfce is lightweight. I imagine "apt- get install xfce" should pick up any dependencies required.
But why does it have to be "the smallest"?

Try look around http://community.aegirproject.org/

Are the server and the desktop OSs on the same PC? If so, then do what Luke said. Or just mount the hard drive and work on it...?
Or you could just install mysql and apache on your current Ubuntu desktop, and try to install Aegir there.
If the server is on a separate PC, you could install Xfce as well as vncserver to accesss it remotely. Or you could obviously just ssh in to "work on the server hard drive".
You're really not giving us much information to work with. Please read http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html . . .
What is it exactly that you're trying to achieve? Like, for example: "Hi I'm trying to teach myself Drupal and systems admin using Aegir to roll out networks of Drupal sites, but I only have 1 PC with limited capacity..."

You need X11 system on the server side and sshd capable of forwarding X11, then you login from the client with $ssh -Y to enable GUI.
You don't need full blown X11 system, there is fake X11 for this tasks, for example xvfb or kdrive(??).
I don't think you need window-manager for this.
And I have doubt whether you need a browser on the server-side in the first place.
fireh.
If you need to access the web-server on the server itself, and you don't have graphics installed, you can use links (there must be a package for it on ubuntu). Links is a text-based web-browser, handy for headless servers. Don't have experience with aegir, and also don't quite understand your problem with the little information you provided, but maybe, this helps.
