Hi,
I am getting ready to move my events calendar from another application. Looking over discussions on google.org, it looks like my best bet would be to use the separate WebCalendar application, and then integrate that, rather than start from the "events" or "calendar" modules?
What I am looking for is a way to let multiple users post events, globally, and to enable both export and import to as many formats as possible. In an ideal world, someone could subscribe to events in Boston, MA, and/or to events in category "workshop".
I have a simple calendar of events now ( http://www.klezmershack.com/calendar/), but even if one ignores the template formatting which I haven't done, this particular system requires that =I= manually add all events, and becomes useless when I am not available.
It seems especially critical to ensure that events can be exported to local PDAs, but also to appear in other calendar applications. The goal isn't necessarily to have people find out about an event at my website, but rather, to find out about the events that interest them where they look for events, and to be able to post information about their own relevant events (in this case, Jewish music and related Balkan, Middle Eastern, and other music).
Thanks, ari
Ari,
I'd be happy to chat with you, my gmail account is sgluskin@gmail.com.
Your post was a bit confusing.
As for "integrating" webcalendar into Drupal, the relevant Drupal module is here: http://drupal.org/project/webcal
Before you do anything, look at the install.txt file that comes in the folder with that module before you do anything. Remember that installing webcalendar is a separate install, though needs to be done in a special way, installing the webcal Drupal module just helps to bridge the two aps, it doesn't install webcalendar for you.
I haven't used it.
The features page at web calendar is at: http://www.k5n.us/webcalendar.phpand it seems to have all the features you want. Hopefully web calendar's RSS feature won't get messed up in the integration process, that is what you need for your concerns in the last paragraph of your post. Note that regarding your last paragraph, if I understood it, you'll have to promote the relevant RSS feeds from your web calendar at other sites in order for those calendar items to show elsewhere on the web. The automatic part is once you get subscribers to your feed then new events appear automatically, but you can't somehow blast the subscription of your feeds.
It would have helped if you gave us the direct URL of that discussion at Google.org instead of a link to the front page; I didn't hunt around to find the relevant thread you referred to, so I can't say whether I would agree with the analysis.
Regarding your dismissal of Event and Calendar modules, it really depends on how you are going to be using the calendar and what you are planning on doing with the rest of your Drupal site. Because the calendar items won't be considered "nodes" from Drupal's point-of-view, it limits the way the calendar can be integrated into the site as a whole. It looks like the webcal Drupal module integrates the user systems so your users will have only one log-in, that is hugely important. However, remember that you are also adding a level of complexity to your site by using webcalendar, you are running two separate applications under the same root directory, that is more complex than adding Drupal modules, especially regarding to upgrade paths. It doesn't mean that isn't the right solution for you, but you should be aware of the potential pitfalls.
Good luck,
Go Klezer!

Shai--there was a big typo in my message. I typed "google.org" when I meant "drupal.org".
The issues are exactly as you describe them. Using the WebCalendar application, I get a lot of functionality out of the box, but integration with Drupal would be less than optimal. It's a dead end, from which I would eventually export data to something that I'd probably have to build from scratch. The existing "events" module, does little useful to this purpose, and based on some conversation last night at the Drupal meetup, I'd be better off starting off with CCK and Views, and then adding in some stuff like location and maps, perhaps, plus date for the start/stop date stuff, and perhaps calendar for the monthly calendar box view, with taxonomy for the categories, etc.
From the reaction at the meeting, it is also clear that I was especially
unclear about how important it is, once the information is available, to make it exportable and to set up ways for other calendars to pick it up. I don't think that this is an area many people have thought about, and I'm not sure I explained it in a useful manner.
Lots of work for my copious spare personal time ;-). I may, for all the defaults, start with WebCalendar so as to move some things forward.
