Does anyone have any suggestions about why my mailhandler pop3 connection is failing?

I've managed to telnet to the exact same location, with no problem at all. So I know the port and server/domain name are correct, as well as the username and password. One thought - does mailhandler automatically remove the domain name if it's at the end of the username (because my host requires the domain name as part of the username).

I've tried adding /notls, and also /norsh and /novalidate-cert (though I don't know what those are), but to no avail. I've also tried connecting through the IMAP settings, just for the heck of it.

Any suggestions?
