Hello,
I recall sessions being moved into php_ini settings as of 4.6. But on my server this somehow does not work. Can anyone give me a hint what to look for?

I think they moved into sites/default/settings.php so that (a) you can have different settings for different sites and (b) they can survive upgrades.
