Yeah, image field doesn't work the way the embed module does. It would be nice if it did. If there isn't one already, I suggest filing a feature request in the imagefield issue queue. Then it'll get looked at by the maintainer and other people using the module. If you are able to sponser the modification, there's probably someone who can make the change.

Sander,
You need to enable multiple values for a CCK field.
You need to go to Admin --> content types --> select "edit" for your content type --> Manage Fields --> then select the CCK field
you've
created for the images --> then scroll to the bottom of the page and select the box that says "multiple".
At that point things vary depending on the cck module for that field. I'm
using the embed media module and for the embeded Flickr pic field
when I select the "multiple" box I the "create flikr pic" upload form now shows 5 boxes for entering URLs of Flikr pics. I
don't see a
setting where I can change how many of those boxes appear on the form. My memory is that for other CCK fields there is a configurable selection I make where I choose how many iterations of the multiple value field you want to show on the form.
I know it was the goal in Drupal 6 to
unfortunately i need this last week ;) so don't have time to wait for someone to get around to it... i'm reading through the embed code now to see if i can figure out how to make the modifications myself - if i get it working i'll submit it myself. If not i'll have an angry client!
Thanks Shai and Michelle for your help.

Yay. I successfully modified the imagefield module to upload 10 images at a time. It's unfortunately not in a state to contribute back to the module but it works for my needs for now, and when i have a bit more time to spare i'll clean it up and submit it - hopefully with a pulldown in admin to select how many fields to display at once. Thanks again for the help.
