Does anyone know of a mailing list system that would work well with Drupal? I am trying to find something similar to constantcontact.com but which is free or priced cheaply.

I'm not familiar with constantcontact, so I'll just say that I use simplenews to send some newsletters and they work out relatively well. If you provide a list of the features that are important to you then perhaps someone can help in narrowing the list of suggested modules.

I need something that can handle a mailing list of 5,000 and send out emails for that. I have been trying PHPlist which seems to work very poorly and cannot send out more than a few hundred emails a day.

Worldmerge http://coloradosoft.com/worldmrg/index.htm Fairly cheap (not free) but is very fast and easy to use.
Or you could use a list mailer like ezmlm which is integrated into qmail (qmailrocks.org)

This may be a limitation set by your ISP, not by PHPlist. I have used PHPlist to send out mailings to over 70,000 people in a day. It has a very well-worked-out system to send large batches in segments of around 1000 each (so as not to upset your ISP). I believe this number is configurable to tailor it to a specific system. Many ISPs will cut off your mail sending if they see too much traffic at one time in order to discourage spammers.
I am certainly curious about other people's experience with mailing systems, but PHPlist certainly does work. I believe that Civicspace (based on Drupal) is designed to work with a version of PHPlist out of the box.

We are using Og combined with mailman and works fine. (It's a strange patch I done but seems to work)
Hello Rob,
I'm going to be setting up a Drupal system for New York City's ArtForChange to replace ConstantContact-- so I'll be finding answers to your question one way or another!
Also, we (Agaric Design Collective - http://agaricdesign.com/ ) just set up an integrated mailing list system and forum for the Media Giraffe Project: http://mgp-forum.org/
Posting to the site sends the message to the e-mail list, and posting to the e-mail list puts the message on the site. It uses the standard MailMan software many if not most Linux hosts include, and I think would scale and work one-way if you need a solution quickly.
If you have a little more time, we can work on your solution at the same time as we do ArtForChange.
