Scenario: a site is using both Joomla and Drupal. Joomla will sit in the "front", where Drupal will sit in a subdirectory and used "behind the front". Is it possible when a user logs in Joomla, he's automatically logged in Drupal too? From what I understand, the Joomla side is the one that needs hacking to accomplish this, right?

Yes, possible. Are the comments in settings.php enough for you?
