Hello,
Over the past few days, I have been getting absolutely killed by spam. I am getting hundreds of spams per day that are slipping the spam module undetected. They seem very obvious, but it seems that due to their very large length, the spam module is ignoring them. I submitted an issue http://drupal.org/node/27035 on this, but haven't heard any response. Alas, I'm no PHP hacker and probably can't fix this on my own, but if it continues I am going to have to move all of my sites to some other software.
I really like Drupal otherwise, and I'm hoping maybe somebody here has some advice for me.
Thanks,
-- John
The solution is simple: spam.module.
Another alternative one is to close down your comments for anonymous users.

I'm already using that (please see the URL I posted; it would be clear). That problem is that spam.module is not blocking these spams.

I have had to do that temporarily, but I do not consider it an acceptable solution. I hate having to create an account before participating in something, and I don't want to inflict that on others. It does, in a very real sense, make it more difficult to participate.
Thanks for those of you that have taken a look into this. Please let me know if I can provide any other information.
Incidentally, also at that URL, you can see that I'm not the only one with this problem.

I had the same problem and did two things:
I accept anonymus users to make comments but their comments has to be apporoved by an administrator. This is ok when the volume of spam comments is limited.
I set my site to Swedish (default). The "spammers" do not handle Swedish:-) - yet!

I am about 65% of the way through a complete re-write of the spam module. It addresses a number of problems inherent in the current implementation, including: - simplified API and database structure to improve support of non-core content (ie trackbacks) - provides mechanisms to auto-expire (delete) spam content - provides logging mechanism to fully trace why content was marked as spam or not spam - can detect/filter an identical comment being posted repeatedly - the code is fully commented
Time permitting, I hope to release the new spam filter implementation in a week or two. It will be released under a dual GPL/Modified BSD license. It is designed to work with Drupal 4.6.x.

Jeremy,
I just wanted to say thanks for all of the work that you've done on spam module, among other things - it's been a huge time-saver for me.
I'm looking forward to the new version! I've posted a patch for spam module to fix some issues with help texts - Let me know if there is anything else I can do to help.
Best regards, Djun
