Sorry I am sending this out on a Sunday, but it's the only day I have had to take care of this.
I am trying to upgrade from 0.8.0.3 which is running on Drupal 4.5 to either the latest CivicSpace or the latest Drupal 4.6. I can't upgrade to 4.7 because there are modules I am using that have not been upgraded to that distribution.
Here's what I did :
After reading most of what is in the pages under
http://civicspacelabs.org/home/faq/installation?page=1 http://civicspacelabs.org/home/faq/installation?page=2 http://civicspacelabs.org/home/faq/installation?page=3
I followed the instructions at
http://civicspacelabs.org/home/upgrade
This is what I did :
1. Copy dailygotham.com to dailygotham_upgrade
2. Copy liza_dailygotham to liza_dailygotham_2
3. I deleted everything in dailygotham_upgrade
Now, I uploaded CivicSpace 0.8.2 BUT because it has CiviCRM, it's spewing this crap
Fatal error: Unknown column 'severity' in 'field list' query: INSERT INTO civsp_watchdog (uid, type, message, severity, link, location, hostname, timestamp) VALUES (0, 'php', 'Unknown column 'newmsg' in 'where clause' query: SELECT COUNT (*) FROM civsp_privatemsg WHERE recipient = '0' AND newmsg = 1 AND recipient_del = 0 in /home/liza/domains/ dailygotham.com/public_html/dailygotham_upgrade/public_html/ includes/database.mysql.inc on line 66.', 2, '', '/ dailygotham_upgrade/public_html/upgrade.php', '207.237.24.22', 1151855156) in /home/liza/domains/dailygotham.com/public_html/ dailygotham_upgrade/public_html/includes/database.mysql.inc on line 66
4. What should be my strategy here? I have looked high and low for the page that had all the distributions of CIvicSpace but cannot find it. It would seem to me that I would have to get 0.8.1 before upgrading to the latest stuff but cannot find any of the old distributions ANYWHERE.
5. Anyhow, given that CiviCRM is conflicting with the upgrade, should I upgrade Drupal only?
6. What would that mean for the CivicSpace modules I am running?

At a glance, it looks like the upgrade script ran into an error where it did not find what it expected to find. Maybe I'm misreading this error message, but it seems to relate to a missing column in the watchdog table (and/or something about the privatemsg table), and not civicrm.
Does CS allow you to choose which update to run? (It's been a while for me.) If it's like Drupal, and you can choose which database update to run, you might revert to your original database, then try an earlier database update number.
If you were to just update Drupal, you would have to manually update each of the other CS modules you wanted to use -- and how smoothly that goes depends upon the module. Sometimes it's easy, sometimes not. And going from 4.5 to 4.6 might tend to be a bit tougher than from 4.6 to 4.7, where the update and install process has been vastly improved.
Hope this helps.

Thanks to everybody that emailed me. Lynn couldn't resist tackling this and so she helped. Here's some comments :
(1) CivicSpace ought to clarify that all you need it the latest distro because the system will take you from one upgrade to the other automatically.
(2) I am still not clear if the UPDATE version at CivicSpace is different from the regular Drupal way of doing things. Is it a requirement that ADMIN/USER 1 be LOGGEDIN before deleting the old files in the new copy of the site that's being upgraded? I think that was part of my problem ---as well as the fact that there was extra white space in that one file Lynn mentioned.
The process has had some bumps and I am not done yet ... but Lynn effort was of great help.
Cheers, liza
