More specifically there are different announcement-esque channels depending on what you want announcements of. There's a security notice mailing list and RSS feed, there's the Drupal.org front page RSS feed, there's a new modules RSS feed, there's an auto-mailer for issue queues for any Drupal module or theme... Which you want to use depends on what sort of information you want.
