Hello fellow Drupal-users,
I am looking for an easy way to create several photo galleries on my Drupal 7 website. It looks like the "Image Gallery" module (part of the "Image" module, http://drupal.org/project/image) won't be upgraded to Drupal 7 (and might not be necessary??).
I tried the "Media" and "Media Gallery" modules but I did not get them to work. First of all, I did not like that I had to install several other modules (e.g. Styles, Multi-Forms...) of which I don't know much; I am very new to Drupal and hence, I would like an easy solution. Furthermore, I never got the images to display correctly, for example, preview sizes instead of the full size image.
And I am more than ready to admit that this was due to the fact that I don't know enough about Drupal yet but it turned out to be too complicated for me to set up.
Anyway, are there any other modules out there for Drupal 7 that could help me?
Is there actually a way to upload photos into my website without any modules? Also, how would I set it up so that photos would go into my private files directory?
Sorry for so many questions, but I think they are all related. I really appreciate any help!
Thanks so much! Andre
Andre,
Welcome to Drupal.
Try just using Views, Imagefield and Imagecache. In Drupal 7, Imagefield and Imagecache are part of core. Views you need to download.
Use the Grid style for your view display.
Use taxonomy (tags) to create the different galleries.
Use an exposed filter to create a drop-down listing the different galleries. After you have more experience with Views, and depending on your use-case, you'll likely want to replace the exposed filter with a Views argument.
Good luck and don't hesitate to write back with more questions

Hello Shai,
thanks for the suggestions. I had already considered Views but wanted to see whether there are (easier??) alternatives. Anyway, I think I could get a view to work. I know a little bit about Imagefield, but what is Imagecache?
Also, (and this might be a stupid question) but how do I get my photos into Drupal? I would like to have them in my private files folder. I was thinking to set up a new content type, Photo for example, with a title field, the Imagefield, tags. Is this the only way? Am I missing something? Can I only upload one photo at a time?
And one more question, when I set up a View like you suggested, I have a gallery. Does it automatically display thumbnail (or smaller) images? And when someone clicks on one image, does it open the original (or larger) image? How do I go about displaying 'Next photo' and 'Previous photo' (and 'Back to gallery') buttons, within the photos in each gallery?
I hope this makes sense. Again, thanks a ton for your help!

If you look at the module from Drupal 6 - http://drupal.org/project/imagecache (which is in D7 core) allows you to setup default sizing options for thumbnails, previews, etc.
Also, (and this might be a stupid question) but how do I get my photos into Drupal? I would like to have them in my private files folder. Depends on your site requirements. Like, if its a general community blog-site your users will probably prefer to have private directories/ galleries - while if you're building a corporate website / CMS you probably won't need per user directories.
Check http://drupal.org/project/imagepicker, for a comprehensive solution, or http://drupal.org/project/insert for a quick and simple option.

I don't use it, but I think you're looking for something like http://drupal.org/project/lightbox2 . Not sure about for Drupal 7; though you can possibly find an answer here: http://drupal.org/node/266126. (Ooh, oh, this looks good: http://drupal.org/project/colorbox.)
