I'm confused about setting up multi-sites. I've read the forums and the instructions but when I go to www.site2.com it is still using the database for www.site1.com. Any ideas?

You should use the settings in settings.php to change the database and so for the second site.

I definitely did that. I know that I've got that setup correctly. How does the dns need to be setup? Is that even a consideration?

P.S. I should note that I'm using a hosting company. I read a bunch about making changes to apache conf files but I can't do that.

Definitely. DNS should point to the same host, or be a CNAME to the real host, but you're probably there already.
Also, Apache (or which ever server you're using) should be set up to point both urls to the same Drupal root. Basically, point everything to one place, and let Drupal sort it out. It will.
Rock on Drupal!!!! I just figured it out. Essentially I learned the following:
DNS must be the same for all sites wanting to use the same directory (I was trying to use url mask forwarding and that was not working).
All domains must be parked in hosting companies parking lot!!
