Hi All,
This is my first post here so be kind ;-)
I've been pulling my hair out trying to set up taxonomy and a navigable menu on my site (with runs Drupal 5.10 from vBulletin)
I've been creating Articles and Reviews stories and I need to set the site up so users can easily navigate to a list of recent stories in each category.
I've set up categories so far called "Articles" and "Reviews".
This is where I am getting rather confused. I've added "Terms" to these (I guess these are sub-categories).
Going to the "Menus" option I've created a new menu and called it "Navigation Test".
This is where I get stuck - how do I link my stories from each category to the menu?
When i click "Add Item" all I get is the option to paste a path/link into - wouldn't it make more sense to have a drop-down list of all my categories here to choose from? Or am I missing something?
I'm sure this is something I should instantly be able to figure out, but it's left me very confused.
I do hope somebody can help.

I think you need to add a module for this functionality:
http://drupal.org/handbook/modules/taxonomy_menu

I already have the taxonomy module installed. That's where I've created the categories.
I'm trying to figure out how to link categories to the menu.
Anybody?

Marc: So you downloaded and installed the taxonomy_menu modulehttp://drupal.org/node/3724 and it is not working as expected? To be clear, the taxonomy module and the taxonomy_menu module are two different modules. Phil
Thanks Phil.
I was hoping to find an easier way of getting this working - it seems to me to be quite tricky to figure all this out...
Do I really need this other module? I though the menu module working in conjunction with Categories took care of this?

Earlier this summer, I tried to do what you are trying: individual menu links to each taxonomy/term/[n]. I abandoned it b/c it was not how I wanted it menu-nesting-wise however folks are doing thishttp://www.sitelancers.net/. [1 http://drupal.org/node/71436#comment-133979]. I do think you need the add-on module to get closer to what you want. On the upside, taxonomy_menu seems well loved and currently supported (apparently an issue last year) . The module's code could be better http://drupal.org/node/307117, but it works. On Wed, Sep 24, 2008 at 3:08 PM, Marc Morris marc@cultmovieforums.comwrote:

OK, I've now installed the taxonomy_menu module but I'm confused about how to set it up. On the module's installation page it says:
"To get you own block, you have to move the category menu item to its own menu. Taxonomy menu puts this new menu in the Navigation menu by default"
How do I move the category menu into its own menu? This doesn't make any sense to me at all.

Point your site to ?q=admin/build/menu and see if it makes sense. If not ask again for help.

Thanks, yes, I'm aware of this.
What i can't work out is how to get a unique menu block/bar for these new added links, rather than it appear in the current menu block.
Thanks,
Marc

Goto admin/build/menu and "Add menu item" to the "Menu" of your choice.
But what do you mean by categories? Do you mean each term? The link would be taxonomy/term/%tid where %tid is the id integer for the term. You can use path aliases to redirect this url to something else of your desiring. So if you have a term foo you can alias taxonomy/term/1 (assuming foo is the first term) to category/foo instead. Aliases are a product of the path module; so you have to enable it to use it.
