Hi Al, Jamie and the others who responded. Thank you for your insights about console, working on modules and Drpl8 not ready yet. I figure that if I am going to do programming to the extent discussed then for this application I'd be better off doing the whole thing in AngularJS, I tried to build some basics in php over the past days but don't want to go that path. The proposed booking/events site is deceptively simple but the Drpl 7 modules didn't provide enough variation. Added to this is that all modules are on all the time and some in Drpl7 load the system to breaking point even though they are seldom required. I 've had no end of issues with Token and Pathauto giving the WSOD, to do any admin work in existing sites have to switch these off. I am hoping that Drpl8 will not require so many modules just to do the simplest things.
I note here that Drpl8 does not like the ini_set('memory_limit','16M'); at the end of settings.php and the tuts on google are wrong in suggesting this alternative.
Regards Roger

Hey Rodger,
Coming from your background I have no doubt your digging D8. I'm sure your familiar with Symfonyhttp://symfony.com/ and Twig http://twig.sensiolabs.org/ is pretty big for us front-end guys.
Still, it ain't there yet.
- D8 tutorials and docs for module developers are pretty sparse. It
has been a moving target and your best bet is probably to dive into porting a contrib module (see #2) you find useful. Much of this is still relevant:http://drupalwatchdog.com/volume-4/issue-1/upgrading-your-modules and there are always the Drupal docs https://www.drupal.org/developing/modules/8.
- This sounds like a classic use of Webform
https://www.drupal.org/project/webform, there is a D8 port underway.
- A simple PayPal or Amazon affiliate link? Aside from that, I can't
imagine trying to build an ecommerce system with D8 in its current state.
I have a similar background and share your excitement about D8, but am still starting new projects with D7 and advising clients to do the same. At least until there is a real upgrade path -- and progress on that front isn't spectacular.
