I feel very blond at the moment. I went to the blog content type and enabled comments with the standard options. There is nothing from the comment module showing up on a blog post. I checked node.tpl.php and it does include a print render($content['comments'])) line. There are, of course, no comments posted because we can't. But the form is not even showing. I don't see anything unusual on the "manage display" page. What gives?

See that you have "Show reply form on the same page as comments" checked in the content type (edit) under comment settings?

I found that all the blog nodes had 0 in the comments field in the node table. I updated them to 2, but I still have to edit each node to turn comments on.

Each blog node you add after you made the change to 'allow comments' for the content type will have comments enabled. All the blog nodes prior to the content type change will need to be enabled individually.

Yes, that dawned on me when I looked at the database. But I updated all nodes to 2 and they still had to be updated manually. Fortunately, there weren't many.

I think the node_revisoin table may need to be updated too. There is a comment field also... its indicates: Whether comments are allowed on this node (at the time of this revision): 0 = no, 1 = closed (read only), 2 = open (read/write).
