In a new theme that I am trying, there is a section which is represented in the code as such: print render($page ['featured']);
Apparently this is to show featured articles or pages. However, I do not see how to configure an article or page as being featured. I have search in the following submenus to now avail: Menu settings Revision information URL path settings Comment settings Authoring information Publishing options
Suspecting that perhaps I would need a module to use the feature, I installed the Featured Content module: http://drupal.org/project/featured_content
However, I still do not see any changes to the Add Content pages which would let me configure an article or page as featured. What am I missing?
Thanks.

Thank you. There is a Featured region in the Featured block. But how does one mark any particular node as being featured?

Please read the documentation more carefully and then start here: http://drupal.org/documentation
You are making presumptions without knowing the basics of Drupal.

Thanks. I have gone over the page again, am I am certain that there is a key sentence either on the block page or on a page that it links to that you want me to read. I really am the kind of guy to go through the doc before asking redundant questions, but I'm baffled here. All the information that I find pertains to configuring on which pages, and where on the pages, the block will appear. Even the Featured block's own options settings deal only with positioning of the block but not which nodes it will display.
Perhaps I am misunderstanding the purpose of the term Featured. I assume based on the name that Featured pertains to nodes that should be displayed on the front page, above all other ephemeral content. Am I wrong?

I have perused through most of those pages, spending more time on the immediate concern. But I will go through the basic docs more thoroughly. Thanks.
You have to put it in a block and then set the block to appear in the featured region. Or, if you have multiple nodes you want featured, create a view block to pull those nodes and set that block in the featured region. good luck

This much is clear.

It is quite the "pull those nodes" bit that I am finding undocumented and unintuitive. Perhaps I need more coffee?
good luck
Thank you. And a peaceful weekend to all!
Then you need to review the documentation on views...i.e. content queries that are extremely powerful. Highly recommended! On Sep 7, 2012, at 8:50 AM, Dotan Cohen wrote:

Thank you, I will get on that now!
By the way, I would like to mention that I most appreciate your and Fred's approach of teaching me to fish rather than handing to me a fish. That is, letting me know which keywords to read about in the fine manual rather than just telling me what to click. I do believe that is the best way to learn. Thanks!
I'm not familiar with the module, but did you check your content types to see if it created a 'featured' type? -Cindy Dykstra

Thank you Cindy, but there is no Featured type. Only Articles and Basic Pages. I also checked for a Featured tag, but there is none.
