I have a nice-sized site which we are interested to upgrade to Drupal 6, in particular to use the latest release (to be released) of CiviCRM which only provides D6 support, but I am finding that a few key modules are still not ready. This lack of modules is one reason why I have not really been using D6 much.
The D6 Panels module is in alpha, but appears to work. The D6 imagefield module is ready to go, but it requires the filefield module, which is in alpha, and the maintainer there doesn't guarantee upgrade compatibility for betas nor RCs nor is any timeline provided when these will be ready.
I do NOT intend to complain about this here, not at all. I was just wondering if I am correct that if my site requires CCK image fields and it is a busy and active site, then there is really no possibility of upgrading to D6 right now.
Thanks!

I'd say that's mostly accurate. Upgrading a live site right now is a gamble. Everything may work fine or you may have lots of problems and have to spend some time elbows deep in the database to fix things. I was working on a site this past week that had a little bit of the latter case during a Views/CCK/Date/Calendar upgrade from Alpha versions to more recent versions but that was a known risk when the site was created.
If you want to help those modules get ready for final release I suggest trying to upgrade a test copy of your site to D6 and thoroughly record/report any bugs you encounter and helping to test any issues in the queue of the modules that are "patch (code needs review)" so that you can help the maintainers get the modules finished.
Best regards, Greg

Yes, most accurate. My experience upgrading from 5.3 to 6.4 was less than impressive. Fortunately the experience was with a site I was just getting set up. Very few modules were installed; but those that were I uninstalled them and tried to upgrade. The upgrade process gives 4 or 5 SQL issues and that is before I hit the upgrade button. I.E. the upgrade.php does an upgrade before you give the OK to upgrade. Once the upgrade was ``complete'' with errors the site just didn't function so I dropped all the tables and reset with the original. I'll blog it somewhere soon, create a copy of my site and begin again to try to debug the issues.
