[drupal-support] Disabling header, sidebars, footer on some pages

[drupal-support] changing Drupal .htaccess files directive

I realize this is sort of a how to unDrupalize something request, but I'm hoping someone has the easy answer. I've got a Drupal site: http://kairosnews.org/ I've installed PHPSurveyor in a subfolder: http://kairosnews.org/surveyor/ However, I cannot access the admin page: http://kairosnews.org/surveyor/admin/admin.php I'm guessing that either (a) Drupal's .htaccess files directive might be blocking access or (b) Drupal assumes it's supposed to read that file. I know that it's not the file directives in .htaccess, for I tried my .htaccess file with all of those deleted. Still not working. Thanks for any help :) Charlie Lowe

It's a bit "drawn out" at the moment, but it works sort-of, except for the fact that the Core pages aren't spoken. Compare the "front page" and the "user account" page which is accessible from the "System" menu item. Hi, Gerhard, You are not totally off track, in fact, you're pretty much on it, but the fact remains that I need it to work without a screen reader. I have implemented this by means of MSAgent, using the MS SAPI for defaults, and, if available, the AT&T TTS engine, which has much better sound. This works fine, but to implement this, you'd need to hack at Drupal by adding another module, not even necessary to be a core module. I have very specific needs here - the text said and the text spoken might not be the same, and you might want to speak only part of the text, similar to only reading a part of the text. This can be done by parsing HTML/XHTML for <h1> .. <h6> tags and parse the text between them as sections, or, by treating the texts as different paragraphs. For example, if the user module has: ================== [ Log in tab ] Username: [ ] Enter your Project EagleEyes username Password: [ ] Enter the password that accompanies your username [ Log in ] [ Register tab ] Username: [ ] Your full name or your preferred username; only letters, numbers and spaces are allowed. Password: [ ] A password and instructions will be sent to this e-mail address, so make sure it is accurate. [ Create new account ] ================== I want the text to be: <h1>Login</h1> Press tab then type your username, followed by pressing tab and type your password. Complete the login process by pressing ENTER <h1>Register</h1> Press tab then entered your desired username, followed by pressing tab and type in your e-mail address. Further instructions will be sent to your e-mail address. (or something like that...) If you create a new language for this purpose, you'd have to create a second language for any recognized language, e.g. EN_UK (text) and EN_UK (spoken). If you do this with my method, this would not necessarily make it less work for the end user, but it will definately make it less work for the person setting up the site and offer more usability for Drupal out-of-the-box, as your method would pretty much mean that you have to patch all the different t() strings into a readable page. Look at any language, it contains short words, not complete sentences or paragraphs, except in the case of the help sections, and with locale's inherent problem that it is difficult to place such short words or phrases within context, this will be disastrous. Kobus, I think you are missing something. :) The way I would approach the problem is to treat text that needs to be read to the blind as a separate language. I would try to redirect them to that site based on user agent or by giving a link on the top of the main site. The site would share the content with the main site if this is desirable. You can then simply create PO files for that site and let the screenreader do the rest. If you need a different formatting for links, you can hack the l() function. Look, for example, at a simple login page, what do you see? Username: [ ] Password: [ ] If you're going to hack t() to speak the text, it will read to you 'Username Password'. For blind users it might be useful to give a bit more instruction. Sighted users can use intuition to understand that the empty space means "username goes here" and "password goes here", but a blind user won't necessarily know that. The concept of "here" is not applicable to them. You can't say "click here" or "provide your e-mail address here". Immediate thought here would be: 1. Hack t(), as you suggested, by adding a parameter, say, sid, which refers to the content of #2. 2. Make a new table in the database with the exact text to speak on each system page, and use the sid parameter to retrieve that information from the database and speak it, if available. This would allow us to accomplish: 1. Keep the site's output to be regular for normal site visitors 2. Speak the normal t()'d text if the new database entry is not provided 3. Speak the alternative text if provided This would require one of two things: 1. Patching each and every core module, finding instances of t() and fixing them 2. Introduce a new function, say, s(), which will have one text string for each different page in Core. I assume #2 would be the easiest, but that s() would have to reside in a module, and be globally available, and tested for its presence with "if (module_exists(speech))..." or something like that? I have created a module that adds a few fields to every node that you create, namely: Spoken text (same as $node->body if not entered) Spoken title (same as $node->title if not entered) etc. While this works relatively well for published content, it will obviously not work for Drupal's system pages, e.g. the user login page or administration pages. Do I have to hard-code this into the Drupal modules, or is there a way I can extend all system modules to have customizable texts which can be spoken? If you need more access on the site to be able to create content and work on this project with me, please let me know. It is only to allow speech in the menu (will not be asked again if you put the site in your trusted zones in IE). The speech of the content will work regardless, providing you have a TTS Engine installed. This is usually installed to a degree with a standard Windows XP Pro install, so you shouldn't experience any trouble. If you look at the main page, you will see that the text is spoken to you, but if you click in the menu on the System -> Maintenance, you should be provided with an Access Denied message. When you press Control+Shift+J to activate speech, you will see what I mean. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Kobus

Ber, I will happily contribute the speech theme, however, most of my stuff is not theme related. It is a module I wrote, and I need to speak the text that is in Drupal core and modules, not content that I added to the site. Did you test it out? Does it work on your side? Could you see my ideas?
