A simple question this time: I'd like to move my hosting because my provider is not very responsive and the connections are quite slow. I am in Italy, do you think I should choice an italian hosting or can I look for a provider mentioned on drupal's forum like ANhosting or ohter? In a few words, if I choose an american Hosting, will the speed be slow for my users or these problems don't exist? thanks.
Hello, Simone,
I'd base my hosting decisions on the level of service, and also the price. If you need service, I'd recommend spending a little more money, as the higher priced hosting plans generally come with better service.
As to the latency issues wrt hosting in Europe or the States, I'll let someone else answer that. My feeling/experience is that it won't make much difference on a good host, but I'd like to hear from someone who has more experience in that area on this.
WRT recommendations in the hosting forums on d.o -- my recommendation there is to stay away. Unfortunately, unbiased information from the hosting forums on d.o is hard to come by. Often, people recommend hosting companies because they have an affiliate relationship, and get money when people sign up.
Cheers,
Bill

My 2c from Greece. I used to have similar thoughts but I have found that the increased ping time of a US-based server should be the least of my worries. I have tried a few local and UK-based companies, they usually offer less for a much higher price and they have been very unwilling to upgrade their PHP and MySQL version or to offer ssh access.
