I need to convert old d6 profile fields into drupal 7 fields. Has anyone done that successfully?

Not that I'm aware of. I know there is a feature request or a task open for 8.x-dev to get this done during the upgrade phase. Until then you can still use the profile module even though it is hidden. You can make it visible by modifying the profile.info file.
Sounds like an issue for the Profile2 module. Have you posted there?
