Hi All,
I'm a newbee with Drupal. I need to make some changes to web sites written in Drupal. I do have access to FTP server and to the database. I can't figure out the file structure, I don't know how to start at all. What do I need to install? How do I find the files? Where to start?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Best, Katy

Start at http://drupal.org/start and let us know what you don't understand.

Find out what theme is being used. Then the files that it "should be in the folder" if the person followed convention. look for /sites/all/themes/theme-name/ in here "normally" will be the css etc. Now if they used a default theme and changed it then your looking at theme folders off root. But they can put the files anywhere technically.
Hope that helps.

Hi Katy.
I am a a total newbie with Drupal, too. Two things helped me grasp the concepts. One is having an experienced Drupal developer friend who has been patient with my million questions; the other was taking the course(s) on lynda.com so I could get some hands on experience with their exercise files. Good luck!

Dear Katy, Without this book I couldn't/wouldn't have survived the learning curve. http://www.amazon.com/Beginning-Drupal-Experts-Voice-Source/dp/1430228598 Tony

Some great suggestions here. One of the best ways to learn Drupal is to join a local DUG. Check Drupal.org for a group near you. Also while lynda.com is great take a look at buildamodule.com too. They have a beginner class.

I would start with http://drupal.org/documentation/understand. Taking the time to understand how the core modules interact with the theme layer is going to pay off in a big way.
If you are totally new to Drupal the best way to figure it out is going to be installing a local version and breaking it a few times. It will be much easier to get a grip on the "Drupal way" after doing a bit of your own configuration and learning your way around the administration items.
Browse through the theme repository and install a theme or two and look over the themeing docs for your version (it would help to know what version of Drupal you are using). Then you can rip apart the theme and figure out what does what.
If you are not using it already, download and install Firebug http://getfirebug.com/. It is going to be your best friend, Drupal likes CSS files :)

Firebug is great! I started by buying "Drupal for dummies" and then Drupal pro development. Works for me, but I'm not a php or CSS expert. Good luck, Bill

Thanks for the tips. I'm on the learning curve.
Another question: I can't find out how to access to "administrative tool". I have the role "super admin" and "admin". But when I log in there's no admin tool. I have just 1 button extra than a normal user. I suppose there can be more than 1 admin???
Best, Katy

Your default navigation may have been disabled. Anyhow go to mysite.com/?q=admin for the admin area.
