I'm running drupal 5.7.
I've got an image as a file attachment to one story. I've got the List box unchecked and refer to it with an <img> tag in-line with the story text.
Now I want to use the image in another story (also by being the target of an <img> tag). If, at some point in the future, I delete the original story, does the attached image automatically get deleted too, leaving my second <img> tag pointing to a non-existent file?

Yes, it would be deleted, leaving an empty image tag. Consider using a module such as IMCE, or Image module to solve this problem. Asset would be another possibility.
